Important Info
We define our surfers into the following categories:
Beginner / New to Surfing? – If you’re stepping onto a surfboard for the first time, we’ve got you covered. Our beginner’s program covers all the essentials, from surfing theory to safety protocols and handling your equipment. Your first experience will involve catching waves in the gentler white water, ensuring a fun and safe start to your surfing journey.
Progressing Beginner – Have you dabbled in surfing before or perhaps completed a surf course? Our program will build on what you already know. We’ll refine your basic skills and guide you to the lineup, where you’ll experience the thrill of riding your first unbroken waves. As your confidence grows, you’ll have the opportunity to transition from a soft board to a hard board.
Intermediate Surfer – Are you comfortable surfing on your own and navigating the lineup with ease? If you’ve mastered the take-off and want to elevate your skills, our intermediate program is designed for you. We focus on wave selection, teaching you to identify the waves that offer the best ride without exhausting your energy. Your instructor will work closely to perfect your technique, ensuring you can manoeuvre smoothly and confidently.
After we have received your enquiry, we will email you if we have any questions and let you know if we can fulfil the dates you require. Sometimes, we may message you on WhatsApp if the booking is time-sensitive.
We take cash payments on the day. You can pay in Sri Lankan Rupees or US Dollars.
Surfing, like any adventure sport, includes some risks. Owakanda Surf Club is not liable for any accidents or injuries that may occur during surfing. Please make sure you have travel insurance that covers this.
Note that to surf, you need a reasonable level of physical fitness and to swim confidently in open water.
By booking one of our surf lessons, you are confirming that no known medical problems prevent you from surfing.
You are more than welcome to use your own board, but we supply all customers with the equipment they need on the day.
Bad weather and dangerous surf conditions are part of our life. We can do nothing about it, but we never push the limits regarding safety. If there is any lightning in the area, customers are immediately taken out of the water. We wait at least 30 minutes after seeing the last strike of lightning or hear the last roll of thunder before entering the water.
Surfing can get dangerous at Owakanda, so sometimes surfing is not possible. It depends on your availability, but we will generally cancel or reschedule to a more suitable and safer day in the event of extremely rough waters. We will focus on other activities if the waves are big or dangerous during your lesson. Beach games, ocean education, beach BBQ, fishing boat trips and beach clean-ups are just some of the activities we’ve done in the past.
